HR / Topotheque with Musical Heritage of Eastern-Croatia:

Preserving Traditional Folk Songs: Students Document Musical Heritage

Between 1998 and 2022, students at the Academy of Arts and Culture in Osijek (UAOS) explored the documentation of traditional folk songs from the Croatian regions of Slavonia and Baranja as part of the course Introduction to Ethnomusicology.

The project was based on around 30 surviving audio recordings made during fieldwork by earlier generations of students at various locations across the region since 1991. The students transcribed the recorded folk melodies in accordance with current ethnomusicological standards.

The aim of the project is to preserve this musical heritage, protect the songs from being forgotten, and document the names of the original singers and the students involved.

The project was supervised by Assistant Professor Dr Brankica Ban and Ivana Puljić, MA in Music Education.
