After the Örebro Region Archive Centre put its Topotheque online in the autumn, the Västmanland Region, one of Sweden’s 25 historical provinces, is now following suit and has made the regional Topotheque ‘Arkiv Västmanland’ available to the public.
The name Västmanland can be translated as ‘land of the western men’ – seen from the perspective of the early power centre of Uppland. The bedrock of Västmanland is rich in mineral resources, which were mined in numerous pits. In addition to metals, marble and many other useful minerals can be found. Among other things, the archive contains material from ironworks that manufactured propellers and turbine wheels. It also contains material from smaller companies, such as this carpet weaving mill, as well as from associations and private individuals. All this with the aim of contributing to a better understanding of the history of this county.
And did you know that the first store of the Swedish ‘fashion giant’ H&M opened in the charming city of Västerås in 1947?
