A / NOE: Schwechat: Topotheque launched

For many who don‘t live in the City of Schwechat, this name is synonymous with the airport. This extensive infrastructure has since been renamed Airport Vienna, and the term Schwechat once again refers to the city that borders the greenery of the Central Cemetery in the east of Vienna. “Schwechater Lager” beer is just as internationally renowned as the airport. It was once produced here in the monarchy‘s largest brewery by two generations of innovative entrepreneurs and exported worldwide as early as the 19th century. In Schwechat, with its now-incorporated cadastral villages, a Topotheque has been launched and presented by the Topothequers at an evening event. The first photos give visitors an idea of the breadth of material the public is being asked to contribute: in addition to photos of historic buildings such as the Maria Theresa Palace, religious buildings, and field monuments, memories of those places and events that shaped the everyday lives of Schwechat residents are also welcome. Perhaps there are more photos of the Konsum store, the post office, and the butcher shop in Rannersdorf, of the „traffic education garden,“ and of the house at Sendnergasse 12. What was once busy behind these rusty roller shutters? How long will this building last? After all, the street front is already immortalized in the Topotheque.
