The market town of Dimbach in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria has taken a step towards digitally archiving its history: Its municipal Topotheque is now available online. From now on, anyone interested can browse through historical photos, documents and memories from the comfort of their own home and experience the development of the municipality at first hand.
The link to Franz Xaver Müller, an important composer and priest who was born in Dimbach in 1870, is particularly exciting. His parents’ house is not far from the parish church and he already showed exceptional musical talent as a child. He later became cathedral conductor in Linz and had a lasting influence on church music. His greatest work, the oratorio ‘St Augustine’, was premiered with 600 singers and a large orchestra. The Topotheque contains over 200 documents and photos of him, including exhibits that were probably previously unknown.
In addition to the documents of Franz Xaver Müller, the new Topotheque of Dimbach also covers everyday history. Who can still remember the Ford D-Series lorry that was so common in the 1970s? Some lost knowledge is also illustrated in this Topotheque: the optical weight. A side effect of Franz Xaver Müller’s photo is the fit of the picture frames on the wall in the background. They placed the picture above the geometric centre so that it does not look like it has slipped down, which is often forgotten today and we wonder why something is ‘not right’ in some pictures. We should also point out a beautiful piece of contemporary advertising graphics, the invitation to the opening of the newly remodelled Futterknecht department stores‘ from 1974.
